Google TV is introducing a useful Find My Remote feature on Android 14

Say no more about your lost remote on Google TV with the new Find My Remote feature coming to newer Android 14 compatible devices in an upcoming update.

The find comes through Android authoritieswho reviewed the updated version of the Google TV emulator after last week’s release Google I/O Developer Conference. References to the new “Find My Remote” feature made it clear that Google will soon make it much easier to locate that long-lost remote hidden under your sofa cushions.

This feature is highly requested by users as it is a well-known addition in some of the interfaces best TVs AND best streaming devices. There’s no word yet on when, or even if, the Find My Remote feature will appear on older Google TV devices, but it will be available natively on newer devices running Android 14.

Once available on newer Google TV devices with Android 14, you’ll find a section in the settings menu that allows you to play audio on your remote when it’s lost or misplaced. However, this requires a Google TV remote with speaker and LED, which may mean older users of devices like Chromecast with Google TV 4K will need an updated remote to use the new feature.

Find My Remote works by flashing the LED and playing a sound on the remote control for approximately 30 seconds. While you can access this feature if you have an older device via a firmware update, it’s unclear at this time how it will work unless the remote comes with a dedicated speaker or LED necessary for the process to work properly.

Most newer TVs come with Find My Remote Control on the hardware itself, but you can access this feature by using your phone as a wireless Google TV remote. It was first introduced at Walmart On Google TV 4K Pro Streaming Box equipped with a useful button on the device that triggers an alert that makes it easier to find the remote control.

Many Google TV users were concerned that the Find My remote feature would be available mainly to Walmart’s Onn products, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. It’s not yet clear when the feature will be made available on newer and older devices, as Google hasn’t confirmed when to expect an official rollout.
