The acquisition of key SF Giants agents is finally starting to live up to its contract

After a slow start to the season, one of the key offseason acquisitions for the SF Giants, third baseman Matt Chapman, is finally starting to hit his stride. They need him to keep it up so he can live up to his contract.

Just a few weeks ago, Chapman was cold and one wondered if he would be worth the three-year, $54 million contract he signed this offseason. On May 7, he hit .209/.257/.345 with 4 home runs and 14 RBI.

Now, as of May 23, he is hitting .245/.311/.426 with 7 home runs and 24 RBI. As Alex Pavlovic noted in X, Chapman he increased his OPS by 131 points only in the last week. This is a great sign for the Giants because if they want to have a winning season, they will need Chapman to stay fit.

It’s common knowledge that Chapman will never be a guy who hits with a high batting average. This has never been his forte as there is too much swing and miss in his game.

However, he has been a power hitter throughout his career, which is what the Giants were counting on when they signed him. He hit 27 home runs in 2021 and 2022, which is the version of Chapman the Giants need.

If he can hit for an average around .250 and finish the season with 20 or more homers and around 75 RBIs, it will be worth the Giants’ investment in him, even if he decides to opt out of his contract after the season.

Just as it was probably too early to overreact to his slow start, we shouldn’t overreact to his hot streak and think he’ll win the Silver Slugger now. He is hitting better now which is a great sign and he still has a positive impact on the glove as evidenced by it amazing game decided to end Wednesday’s match.

If he can continue to hit this clip and create internet gems, the Giants should be in a very good place.
