DEME deploys CAPE Holland equipment to build monopiles for offshore wind farms in Virginia

Offshore workers

LONDON — DEME has contracted Venterra Group subsidiary CAPE Holland to operate monopile installations at the 2.6 MW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project located 42 km offshore Virginia Beach, USA.

The company will deploy a quadruple CAPE VLT-640 platform and a separate CAPE VLT-640 unit for 176 monopiles weighing up to 2,200 tons each and with a top diameter of 8.5 m.

Operations will be conducted from the DEME installation vessel Orion, with monopiles driven into the initial soil layers using a CAPE Vibro lifting device to reduce the risk of pile driving.

An impact hammer will be used for final penetration of the monopiles. The arrangement of the devices should enable the installation of casing piles without leaks in the three marine substations.

Dominion Energy announced on May 22 this year Orion A heavy transport vessel installed the first monopile foundation approximately 40 km offshore Virginia Beach coast.
