Huge move by state to cut new bills

Businesses and households with solar panels will soon be able to access cheaper batteries to store the solar energy produced during the day.

The new incentive is intended to help reduce energy bills, enable 24/7 access to electricity and increase the reliability of the nationwide electricity grid.

The NSW Government’s announcement is part of its Peak Demand Reduction program, which aims to encourage more homes and businesses to switch to solar power, and enable those who already have it to make the most of their solar energy.

By connecting batteries through virtual power plants (VPPs), businesses and households will be able to share power across the power grid, according to a statement from the state government.

The program also includes a $1,600 to $2,400 rebate on the initial home battery installation cost for batteries with existing solar panels and provides a $250 to $400 incentive for connecting a battery to a VPP.

You can apply for this benefit for the second time three years after submitting the first application.

Minister for Climate Change and Energy Penny Sharpe said the move was part of the State Government’s shift to renewable energy.

“This is a targeted action to support people using solar energy in taking the next step towards lowering their bills by using renewable energy,” she said.

“More than one million households in New South Wales have solar panels on their roofs, and adding batteries will ensure they benefit 24 hours a day, not just when the sun is shining.”

The incentive will be available from November 1, 2024, but only through approved providers.
