WM opens $55 million RNG facility in Texas

WM today opened a new renewable natural gas (RNG) facility in Lewisville, Texas, USA.
The nearly $55 million WM DFW RNG facility is expected to generate approximately 1.2 million MMBtu of RNG annually, which the company says will be enough to meet the needs of nearly 55,000 households annually.
This is WM’s second RNG facility in the DFW area and will provide renewable energy to North Texas residents on this scale. The first facility will open in 2020 in Ferris, Texas, at the WM Skyline RNG facility.
It is also part of WM’s broader planned investments in renewable energy, which WM says will total more than $1 billion between 2022 and 2026.
The DFW RNG plant processes landfill gas captured from the WM DFW Landfill as a result of the decomposition of organic material, which produces RNG.
“We are proud to bring more renewable energy to the Dallas area as part of our continued sustainability strategy,” said Tara Hemmer, WM chief sustainability officer.
“Renewable natural gas collected in our landfills is recognized as a low-emission renewable fuel source that can power communities and natural gas vehicles.”
WM’s 2022-2026 investment plan is expected to include more than 20 RNG installations that could power up to 1.7 million homes and support WM in maximizing RNG allocation to its natural gas receiving fleet.
Currently, almost half of the fuel supplied to WM’s natural gas fleet comes from renewable sources.

“With WM’s expertise, we know that the DFW RNG facility will be an outstanding example of how we implement sustainability in our growing and vibrant community.”
