We call on the Government of Georgia to implement systematic measures and strict policies against women and perpetrators of domestic violence

Public Defender issues statement on femicide and calls on the Georgian government to implement systematic, consistent actions and strict policies against women and persons committing domestic violence.

As noted in the Ombudsman’s statement, efforts must be stepped up to prevent similar tragedies from happening again, by strengthening the legal framework, coherently enforcing existing legislation and providing support services for survivors of violence.

According to Levan Ioseliani, to promote gender equality, it is necessary for the state to implement complex and comprehensive actions that include education, economic empowerment and the fight against harmful stereotypes.

“The Public Defender of Georgia expresses deep sadness over the murders of four women in Georgia in May. These horrific acts of violence not only rob us of our children, mothers and sisters, but also undermine the values of safety, respect and equality that we strive to uphold.

The Public Defender of Georgia unequivocally condemns the violence. Femicide is the most serious form of gender-based violence and a violation of the human right to life. Each event is a stark reminder of the pervasive challenges women face every day.

To prevent similar tragedies from happening again, we must step up our efforts by strengthening the legal framework, consistently enforcing existing laws and providing support services for survivors of violence.

As a result of monitoring femicide, it is clear that discriminatory views about the role of women in society remain the root cause of femicide. In response, to promote gender equality, the state must implement complex and comprehensive actions that include education, economic empowerment and the fight against harmful stereotypes. Men and boys must also be engaged as allies in these efforts, recognizing their role in fostering a culture of respect and equality.

The Office of the Public Defender of Georgia continuously monitors cases of gender-based violence, cooperates closely with relevant institutions and will continue policies that promote gender equality and protect women’s rights.

Among other challenges facing the country, women’s rights to life, health and safety cannot be forgotten, which is why we call on the Government of Georgia to implement systematic, consistent measures and a stringent policy towards women and persons committing domestic violence,” the Ombudsman’s statement states.
