RWE signs two 15-year PPAs with Microsoft for wind farms in Texas

German utility RWE has signed two 15-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) with tech giant Microsoft, committing to deliver 446 MW of clean energy from two new onshore wind farms in Texas.

The company will provide Microsoft with renewable energy from the 243 MW Peyton Creek II wind farm and the 203 MW Lane City project.

The PPAs are part of Microsoft’s plan to use 100% renewable energy by 2025.

RWE Clean Energy CEO Andrew Flanagan said: “At RWE, we are excited to work with Microsoft to deliver the clean electricity needed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Together, we are united in our efforts to secure a clean energy future.

“As a growing green company, we are committed to achieving our renewable energy goals by supporting local communities to develop sustainably.”

The groundbreaking for the Peyton Creek II wind farm has been held and RWE has confirmed its investment decision on the Lane City project.

Both wind farms will use 4.5 MW Vestas V163 turbines and construction is being led by Wanzek Construction and RES Energy Solutions.

Construction has begun on the Peyton Creek II wind farm in Bay City, Texas, and the Lane City wind farm located in Wharton County is scheduled to begin construction this summer.

Each wind farm is expected to create 250 to 300 jobs during construction and 20 permanent jobs once completed.

RWE currently has 33 renewable energy projects in Texas with a total capacity of 4.3 gigawatts (GW).

Once these two projects are completed, RWE’s renewable capacity in Texas will increase to 4.8 GW.

This expansion will strengthen RWE’s presence in the ERCOT market and expand its broad U.S. renewables portfolio, which includes 9.3 GW of wind, solar and battery power.
