Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) on Thursday released its semi-annual engagement report covering 99% of views on the platform from July to December 2023. From hit TV shows to original movies, viewers watched more than 90 billion hours of content on Netflix in the second half of 2023 .

Netflix released its first engagement report last year.

Data: Netflix original content dominated the most-watched movies and TV shows. The first three parts of “Lupin” generated almost 100 million views, “The Witcher” 76 million, and “Korona” 50 million.

The original “Leave the World Behind” video generated 121 million views, and the original animated video “Leo” generated 96 million views. Both are among the most popular Netflix movies ever.

Non-English language content performed particularly well, accounting for almost a third of total viewing time. Korean media represented 9% of views, Spanish media 7%, and Japanese media 5%.

Non-original content also performed well. “Young Sheldon” had 88 million views and “Grey’s Anatomy” had 51 million. None of them managed to top “Suits,” which had 144 million views over nine seasons.

Given that the report only covers the second half of 2023, it doesn’t include recent popular entries like “Tom Brady’s Roast.”

Why is it important: Netflix’s continued release of original content is an encouraging sign for the platform. While the studio still has missteps like 2022’s “Blonde,” its recent performance has been strong.

The high viewership of foreign-language content is due to Netflix’s increased investments in the production of such content. The 2021 Korean-language show “Squid Game” is the most-watched original series in Netflix history. The premiere of the second season of the series is scheduled for the second half of 2024.
