EPA rejects Alabama plan to regulate coal ash

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday denied Alabama’s plan to manage coal ash in landfills and surface impoundments in the state, saying the proposal was “significantly less protective” than federal law standards.

“EPA is focused on protecting people from exposure to pollutants like coal ash, which can cause cancer risk and other serious health problems,” EPA Administrator Michael Regan said in a statement.
