Biden campaign releases ad sharply criticizing Trump on gun control 2 years after Uvalde school shooting

Two years after the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School Uvalde, TexasBiden’s campaign has released a new digital ad sharply criticizing former President Donald Trump on gun control.

“We honor those we lost in Uvalde,” reads the ad text displayed on a black screen. As “Ave Maria” plays, the lyrics continue and an altar appears to honor the 19 children and two teachers involved in the 2022 massacre, followed shortly thereafter by photos of President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden visiting Uvalde.

“Joe Biden expanded background checks and that’s what he’s fighting for ban assault weapons” – we read in the text.

The words “Donald Trump did nothing to keep us safe” appear in the oral recording.

The ad ends with a final photo Biden at the monument in Uvalde and the words: “I will never forget, I will never stop fighting.”

The 30-second ad is part of a seven-figure media ad buy for the campaign in May aimed at Latino voters. The film will be broadcast on battlefields in Arizona, Pennsylvania and Nevada and will have subtitles in Spanish.

“No family should have to experience the pain and trauma that Uvalde families will experience for the rest of their lives,” Julie Chavez Rodriguez, Biden-Harris campaign manager, said in a statement. “As guns remain the leading cause of death for young people in America, President Biden and Vice President Harris understand the urgency of this crisis and have brought together leaders from both parties to take historic action to combat gun violence.”

It’s the Biden campaign’s latest effort to target Latino voters in key states where Latino voters are expected to play a key role in determining the outcome of the November election.

In 2020, President Biden won Arizona by a majority of less than 11,000 votes. This year, one in four voters in Arizona will be Latino. The the latest CBS poll shows that Biden is currently 5 points behind Trump.

Six months before the election, the Biden campaign stepped up its attacks on Trump.

On the same day that the Uvalde ad was released, the campaign also featured a new TV spot narrated by actor Robert De Niro. The “Snapped” ad, which will run in battleground states, focuses on Trump’s former presidency as Biden’s campaign aims to woo voters away from their political rival.

“We knew Trump was out of control when he was president,” the ad says. “Then he lost the 2020 election and he snapped.” A series of phrases appear – “dictator”, “bloodbath”, “ending the constitution” – intended to paint a dark and disturbing picture of what a second Trump term would look like.

The ad featuring De Niro is part of a campaign strategy to intensify attacks a month before the first presidential debate in the general election, which will take place on June 27 in Atlanta.
