The KJ Show, episode 90: We explain the issue of renewable energy

Each week I host “The KJ Show,” which offers a mix of breaking news and practical advice on the impact the energy industry has on consumers. During this dynamic program, I combine weekly energy updates with conversations with leaders in the energy efficiency community.

After each show, I’ll share it here with the Energy Central community in case you can’t join me live.

KJ show #90 – About renewable energy, of course

Solar and wind are seen as critical energy sources in a net zero world. However, as the number of installations increases, so do the unforeseen side effects of these energy sources.

Scientists recently discovered that wind turbines, especially those installed close together, create a “wake-up effect” that reduces energy production by as much as 34-38%. This variability creates a challenge for network operators, as any imbalances can lead to devastating power outages.

Not only are these power sources inherently unreliable, but their reliability drops dramatically during inclement weather. For example, wind turbines freeze and solar panels often do not receive enough sunlight during harsh winter conditions. Even Hawaii suffered power outages when winter rains recently knocked out two power generators, and heavy clouds and light winds meant there wasn’t enough electricity to make up the difference.

On this show, our host, Dr. Katherine Johnson, will shed light on some of the many reasons why renewable energy is simply not ready for full-scale implementation.
