Circle to Search gets slightly worse by removing Google Lens shortcut

TL;DR

  • Circle to Search received an update that removes one of its tools.
  • The feature has lost its Google Lens shortcut.
  • The change has been widely rolled out.

Just as it was announced that HONOR phones would get Circle to Search, the feature has been downgraded somewhat. Circle to Search has now lost one of its shortcuts.

Previously, when you enabled Circle to Search, there was a field at the bottom of the screen that you could tap to enter a text query. On the right side of the field was the “G” logo which opens the Google application. To the right of the G logo was a microphone icon for voice search and an icon for Google Lens. Finally, there was a button with a musical note for searching songs and a second button for translations.

First spotted by 9to5GoogleThe Circle to Search UI has now been changed to no longer display the Google Lens icon. You can see the old behavior in the left image and the new behavior in the right image.

With this update, users lost their two-step access to Google Lens, regardless of where they are on their phone. It’s unclear why the company removed the shortcut from the feature, but it might have something to do with an attempt to clean up the UI so that it looks less cluttered.

This change has now been widely rolled out, so you should see the new look the next time you trigger it. Hopefully this is just a bug or test and the shortcut will return in the future.

While Circle to Search may have lost one of its shortcuts, it could gain a rather useful ability. During our APK teardown last week, we discovered that the feature can start working on any video, including those that aren’t on YouTube.
