Amazon is opening a new robotics fulfillment center in Calgary, Canada

US e-commerce giant Amazon has inaugurated its newest robotics fulfillment center, YYC4, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

The facility has an area of 2.8 million feet2 and employs over 1,500 people.

YYC4 aims to accelerate customer order fulfillment through advanced technology while providing employees with valuable skills training and career development opportunities.

Amazon YYC4 CEO Sushant Jha said: “Amazon is excited to invest in Calgary, benefiting our employees, customers and community.

“Thanks to the ingenuity of our Amazon Robotics technology, we are creating new career paths and development opportunities. At the same time, we are delivering customers the fastest speeds ever through our most secure, most sophisticated and most advanced operating network.”

With the new facility, Amazon now operates five fulfillment centers, one sortation center, three delivery stations and two AMXL delivery stations in Alberta.

Amazon Robotics fulfillment centers enable workers to collaborate with automated systems and robots, improving efficiency and safety.

Robotics technology in YYC4 includes RWC4, a robotic arm that sorts cases and constructs pallets for shipping; and Kermit, a cart that carries empty bags and dynamically adjusts speed and route.

These improvements not only streamline operations, but also provide employees with hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology.

YYC4 Learning Coach Danielle Olliviere said: “I learned a lot working with Amazon Robotics. The goal is not just to master new technology, but to chart a completely new career path.

“Seeing my colleagues implement this innovation was truly inspiring for me as a learning coach. We don’t just move with the times; we shape the future.”

Earlier this month, Amazon expanded its services to South Africa with the launch of its dedicated online shopping platform Amazon.co.za.
