Kathlyn and Lincoln spent 10 years in a 400-square-foot, one-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles.

Pooling the money they saved, the couple built their 1,600-square-foot dream home.

While the historic bungalow in Boise, Idaho was beautiful, it didn’t quite suit the couple like the tiny space they once knew and loved.

Setting out to find another chic apartment of their dreams, they prepared to move with the help of Home Made Nation’s Tiny House Nation program.

In a YouTube video of the season three episode, they tried to reclaim their old lifestyle on a budget of $125,000.

Kathlyn and Lincoln visited three small homes in the Boise area before settling on a 200-square-foot space built entirely of hay bales.

FEATURES AND MIXED FEELINGS

The rustic cottage features stained glass windows and barn siding ceilings, as well as a secluded brick patio.

Although there was little storage space in the bedroom, with only a wardrobe and shelves on either side of the bed, the couple came up with a simple solution for the kitchen.

The pot rack, which Kathlyn described as “basically the perfect” addition to the kitchen, saves the couple a lot of space.

Pots and pans hang above the appliances on an oval stand made of metal and wire, in a streamlined manner.

“I love the kitchen,” Kathlyn said. “For 200 square feet, that’s a lot.”

But from the beginning they didn’t quite fit into this small house.

“200 square feet is tiny,” Lincoln said. “It’s not just a little thing… we’re on top of each other. In my case I don’t know if it will work.

Apart from its size, what shocked them the most was the bathroom, which is separated from the bedroom by a single curtain and located just a few meters from the bed.

The small dining room also proved burdensome for both of them.

All about tiny houses

The popularity of tiny homes has skyrocketed, but there’s still a lot of confusion surrounding them.

According to Realtor, tiny homes are technically between 100 and 400 square feet.

Tiny house laws vary by location.

It is important to check local ordinances to make sure tiny homes are legal and built to code.

A family of four was told they had to leave their tiny home after four years after the city found them in violation of housing codes.

Ultimately, however, they agreed to settle for the space, arguing that it “had character” and that workarounds could be made, especially regarding the small bathroom and sleeping area.

The 550-square-foot grassy lawn gives the couple room to potentially create a garden and entertain guests.

At the end of the episode, the two even planned to invite Lincoln’s mother over for Thanksgiving to cook in their tiny home.

Over time, Lincoln plans to upgrade the kitchen equipment and purchase a larger sink.

One homeowner built a tiny house for his mother in his backyard for just $10,000, even though he had no experience.

Plus, a new little village only costs $1 a year in San Jose.
