Haliburton Highlands OPP are responding to injuries caused by an explosive device

The Haliburton Highlands detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) says they responded to a home in Algonquin Highlands after receiving a report of serious injuries caused by an explosive.

On May 24, 2024, at approximately 5:04 p.m., police were called to assist Fire and Emergency Services at a home on Comak Crescent after a person was injured by a homemade explosive device. The person was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

As the investigation continued, neighbors were evacuated and the OPP’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit (EDU) arrived on scene and recovered and secured additional explosive substances and devices from the residence.

There are no explosive substances or devices on site that would pose a threat to public safety.

As a result of the investigation, Kevin BROWN, 36, of Mississauga, was arrested and charged with:

  • Explosives – manufacture or possession for unlawful purposes
  • Breach of discretion by an adult

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Haliburton Highlands OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or tips can be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

The OPP takes all threats to public safety seriously and provides the resources necessary to assess and respond to the threat. If you have information about a possible explosive device, call 9-1-1 and provide police with as much information about the threat as possible.
