Google rents new office space in Bengaluru

Google has leased 649,000 square feet of office space at Alembic City in Whitefield, Bengaluru. According to sources familiar with the deal, the tech giant will pay ₹62 per square foot per month for a three-year lock-in period as part of its expansion plan in India. The move is part of Google’s strategy to lease both traditional and flexible office space in large cities to expand its presence.

In 2022, Google Connect Services India Pvt. Ltd, a subsidiary of the US tech giant, has extended its lease of around 600,000 square feet of office space in Hyderabad. The company has also agreed to lease 1.3 million square meters of office space from Bagmane Developers in Bengaluru.

Since 2020, Google’s office space in India has increased by 3.5 million square meters. Google currently has a presence in five Indian cities with a total real estate footprint of 9.3 million square meters.

Google did not respond to ET’s queries. The company has planned significant investments in India, including manufacturing smartphones at a Foxconn plant in Tamil Nadu and starting drone production in the state. Google plans to start producing Pixel smartphones in India, starting with the Pixel 8. Reports also indicate that the company is shifting some of its responsibilities to India, which is a rapidly growing market.

“India is a priority market for Pixel smartphones and we are committed to making the best hardware and software available to people across the country,” Google said in a blog post earlier this month.

The Indian office market is expected to witness strong demand this year as major IT companies resume offline work post-pandemic. Large companies expect a significant increase in demand for flexible work spaces in the coming year.
