A giant new solar project is set to revolutionize South Africa’s green energy sector

The significant milestone was achieved with the development of a gigascale solar project, the result of a co-development consortium consisting of Hive Hydrogen, Akuo Energy Afrique, Africoast Investments and Golden Sunshine Trading. The consortium, which strengthened its cooperation earlier this year, has been working diligently over the past two years towards this achievement.

Don McGillivray of Africoast Investments highlighted the joint effort, noting: “Africoast, Golden Sunshine Trading and Akuo Energy are jointly developing a 6,000 MW pipeline of solar and wind energy projects, particularly for the Coega Green Ammonia projects. The Crossroads Green Energy Cluster is being established as part of the first phase of the Coega Green Ammonia Project, while the remaining projects are undergoing a phased development phase to meet future demand in Coega and potential other off-takes. We are proud to partner with Hive Energy on these strategic projects.”

Hive Energy’s R5.8 billion (R105 billion) green ammonia project, which will produce over 1 million tonnes per year, is South Africa’s flagship investment. The project was presented at the Presidential Investment Summit in Sandton, South Africa, and in November 2022 received strategic integrated project status from the Ministry of Public Works. This project is expected to provide a significant economic boost to South Africa, benefiting the Eastern, Northern and Western Capes.
