Renewable energy and energy storage developer Genex has appointed London-based Arup as the owners engineer for the first stage of its 775MW Bulli Creek solar and battery storage project in south-east Queensland.

Genex and its partner J-Power – one of Japan’s largest energy companies – are working to make a final investment decision on the project, which will be built about 150 kilometers southwest of Toowoomba, Queensland, by the second half of 2024.

Bulli Creek development rights include 2 GW of solar capacity, and the project is already subject to planning, environmental and cultural heritage approvals.

The original plan was to prioritize the delivery of an autonomous battery energy storage system, but the initial phase of the project will now include up to 775 MW of solar capacity as Genex has signed a long-term supply agreement with Fortescue.

Genex said the Fortescue deal could form the basis for a solar project of at least 450 MW and a potential first-stage solar project of 775 MW, which would make it the largest in the domestic electricity market.

Sydney-based Genex says the initial solar farm phase will be followed by a battery energy storage system with a capacity of up to 400 MW/1,600 MWh, with the potential for further solar and/or energy storage phases of up to a full 2 GW of capacity at the project site .

Canadian company PCL Construction has been awarded the contract for the engineering, procurement and construction of the first stage of the project, with first energy production expected in 2026.
