The Maritime Prefecture of the Mediterranean (Le préfet marine de la Méditerranée) has issued new regulations for yachts over 45 meters in length that want to dock in the French Mediterranean Sea.

Although this new regulation does not provide for major changes, but instead provides for several modifications in certain anchorage zones, Art Professional Sailing Association (PYA) provided recommendations for captains wishing to anchor in the region.

First, to ensure that captains anchor in the correct area, PYA strongly encourages captains to speak to the appropriate semaphore (radio station) on Channel 16 or by telephone, asking the authorities to confirm that the vessel is in the correct area.

It is also advisable for the captain to record the conversation, as all semaphore conversations are recorded.

A list of all semaphores along with their coverage, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses can be found in Annex 1, page 9 regulations.

Annexes II and III (pages 10, 11) detail what information captains should provide to the semaphore when applying for an anchoring or dynamic positioning permit.

Annex IV (pages 12-13) presents a list of regulations (Arrêtés) relating to the anchoring of vessels over 24 meters in length, and Annex V (pages 14-47) presents a list of compulsory anchoring areas with charts.

PYA adds that in addition to the typical navigation methods for anchoring, captains should also use the “Nav&Co – Navéco experience” smartphone application. This is the official application developed by the French maritime authorities, constantly updated with new regulations as they are adopted.
