Two suspicious items were investigated over Memorial Day weekend, including one at SLC Airport

Police responded to two separate reports of suspicious items found in Salt Lake City over Memorial Day weekend, including one at the airport containing possible explosive ingredients.

Officials said the initial investigation began just before 11 a.m. Saturday when a “suspicious object” was found in a grassy area near 1400 North 7200 West.

The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Hazardous Devices Unit provided assistance “due to the appearance of the item,” they said.

Before the facility was deemed safe, a robot was used to take photos of the facility. Due to the ongoing investigation, no additional information has been released on this matter.

In response to the incident, police said they were informed of “unknown items” found in a rental car at Salt Lake City International Airport.

The holiday weekend was expected to be a busy one at the airport, and on Friday the Transportation Security Administration discontinued screening of most travelers at U.S. airports.

“The items included components typically used for controlled explosives such as construction or demolition,” the press release stated.

The Hazardous Equipment Unit again assisted in securing the items safely. Due to the ongoing investigation, no other details were provided.

“The Salt Lake City Police Department reminds community members to never approach or hold any unknown or potentially dangerous objects<<>,” officials said. “Instead, call 911 immediately.”
