Local officials face a complicated reality in implementing Massachusetts’ ambitious green energy initiatives. One of the latest challenges is the installation of battery energy storage systems, which some cities are trying to block. Amanda Zuretti discusses this issue in Worcester Business Journal, including petitions to stop the installation of these systems and state action to obtain approval for the systems. Energy produced from wind, water and solar energy is typically stored in battery energy storage systems. As developers look for new places to install these systems in Massachusetts, an increasing number of cities are opposing such installations, citing safety and noise concerns.

The state needs the cooperation of these cities because they have the power to decide where these systems can be placed. Without the cities’ blessing, it would be nearly impossible for Massachusetts to achieve its lofty goal of cutting emissions in half by the end of the decade.
