Stocks fell on Monday morning after weekend developments in the ongoing U.S.-China trade war dampened optimism about an upcoming agreement. Rhetoric on both sides appeared to have improved in recent weeks, but after the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation failed to reach a joint statement for the first time and Vice President Pence criticized China, it is again unclear whether a joint statement will be reached. progress made soon.

Technology stocks were among the worst performers in morning trading, with investors continuing to punish Nvidia NVDA for post-earnings woes and Apple AAPL for sluggish iPhone sales. Japanese carmaker Nissan NSANY also published a strange headline saying that CEO Carlos Ghosn had been arrested in Tokyo on suspicion of business misconduct.

Traders in the cryptocurrency community are also feeling the volatility as prices of bitcoin, litecoin, ethereum and the like fell today thanks to renewed concerns about their viability as an asset class and store of value.

In the first half of today’s show, Ryan discusses each of these stories, so be sure to watch the segment to learn all the key facts!

Later, Ryan reviews upcoming earnings reports for Lowe’s LOW, Target TGT and TJX TJX, some of the last major retailers to report their latest results this season.

Ryan analyzes these stocks by looking at their share price and earnings outlook dynamics, with the goal being to see if any of these retailers have seen a divergence in these two key trends.

An attractive divergence ahead of the report would indicate a positive earnings trend and a decline in stock prices. Since stock prices tend to follow earnings trends over time, this can give investors room to upside if actual results turn out to be strong.
