The live e-commerce team on WeChat channels is merging into the WeChat open platform team

On the afternoon of May 28, WeChat issued an internal announcement that the WeChat Channels live e-commerce team had been reorganized.

It is reported that the WeChat Channels live e-commerce team will be integrated with the WeChat Open Platform team (Mini programs, official accounts, etc.), and the original WeChat Channels live e-commerce team will be led by the head of WeChat Open Platform.

Informed sources said this adjustment will help integrate the live video e-commerce business into the WeChat ecosystem more effectively and provide better development opportunities for live video e-commerce.

Late last year, news broke that WeChat Channels had increased investment in live streaming e-commerce assets. To this end, it has adjusted the organizational structure of the WeChat Pay and WeChat Channels teams, aiming to integrate WeChat Pay and WeChat Channels and allocate more resources to “live streaming e-commerce”.

Moreover, the GMV (gross merchandise volume) of e-commerce on WeChat channels is estimated to reach about 100 billion yuan by 2023. In Tencentannual meeting in January 2024, Pony Ma, CEO of Tencentstated that video channels are “the hope of all goose factories” and that this year the emphasis will be on the development of e-commerce of live video channels.
