RWE will build Australia’s first eight-hour BESS project

German utility RWE has announced an investment decision to build Australia’s inaugural eight-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) in New South Wales.

The project, adjacent to an existing solar farm near Balranald, will have a capacity of more than 50 MW and 400 megawatt hours.

RWE’s 50MW Limondale BESS lithium-ion energy storage facility was the only successful project in New South Wales’ first tender for long-term energy services contracts.

The project has a signed long-term contract for the provision of energy services, and its construction is scheduled to start in the second half of 2024, and its commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2025.

It will be located next to the 249 MW Limondale RWE solar farm, enabling seamless integration with existing network infrastructure.

Limondale BESS is designed to support the energy transition by storing surplus renewable energy and feeding it into the NSW grid during periods of peak demand.

Tesla has been appointed as the BESS supplier, while local energy solutions provider Beon Energy Solutions will handle the rest of the supplies to the plant.

This includes all necessary civil, structural, electrical and inspection works to connect the megapack to the current 33 kV substation.

RWE Renewables Europe & Australia CEO Katja Wünschel said: “RWE’s investment decision and signing of supplier agreements for the Limondale BESS project is an exciting step forward in our commitment to Australia’s renewables sector and support of New South Wales’ renewable energy ambitions.

“As a pioneer in battery storage, RWE develops, builds and operates innovative and competitive battery storage systems in Europe and the USA, and soon also in Australia. We look forward to continuing to work with all stakeholders to help realize the country’s renewable energy goals.”

RWE’s involvement in Australia dates back to 2013, when construction of the Limondale solar farm began in 2018.

The photovoltaic farm consists of 872,000 panels and is capable of powering approximately 105,000 homes per year. It achieved full commercial operation in 2021.
