Thales equips CRRC locomotives for Thailand with ETCS equipment

The French company Thales, a leader in technology and safety systems, has successfully completed a project to equip 50 locomotives of the Chinese company CRRC Qishuyan for the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) with modern on-board devices of the European Train Control System (ETCS), according to the rail transport information portal Railway supplies.

ETCS, or European Train Control System, is an advanced technology designed to standardize and improve rail control and management systems in Europe and beyond.

The inclusion of this system in locomotives supplied to Thailand demonstrates the country’s commitment to integrating modern technologies into its railway network.

A characteristic feature of the Thales RailBot family of devices is their modular design.

This allows for flexible integration with locomotive equipment, which is particularly important when modernizing existing rolling stock.

RailBot offers a scalable system that can be expanded to higher ETCS levels in the future and implement automatic and unmanned driving functions.

The contract between Thales and CRRC was signed in January 2022 and has become the largest project for Thales in the supply of RailBot devices.

Previously, Thales successfully cooperated with CRRC, equipping eight shunting locomotives for the Berlin S-Bahn and three locomotives for the Czech passenger carrier LEO Express.

In the case of Thailand, this project is a continuation of fruitful cooperation with Thales, which has previously implemented six rail transport projects in the country.

However, none of the previous projects was limited solely to the supply of on-board safety devices, which underlined the strategic importance of the current order.

The use of ETCS in locomotives not only increases safety, but also improves operational efficiency.

The system allows for shorter intervals between trains, increased speeds and more precise traffic control, which ultimately leads to increased rail capacity and improved passenger service.

The development and implementation of technologies such as ETCS demonstrates commitment to the sustainable development and modernization of transport systems.

The implementation of ETCS in Thailand not only facilitates integration with global railway standards, but also opens new opportunities for the future development of the country’s transport network.

Overall, Thales’ project to equip CRRC locomotives for Thailand with ETCS equipment represents a significant step forward in railway technology.

It emphasizes the importance of international cooperation and the use of advanced solutions to improve the safety and efficiency of transport systems.
