The technical director of the Chartered Association of Building Engineers becomes its new chief executive

Richard Harral, former CTO at CABE, has been officially announced as the new CEO.

Richard Harral FCABE has been with CABE since 2018. Joining as Technical Director, Richard worked closely with former CEO Dr Gavin Dunn, playing a major role in the association’s transformation which saw CABE expand its membership base and become an Engineering Council licensed professional engineering body.

As CTO, Richard is co-author of the book BSI Flex 8670: The Built Environment. Basic building safety criteria within the competences. Code of Practice” and led to a cross-industry report on future building inspection legislation. This report became the starting point for the Building Safety Regulatory Authority (BSR)’s consideration of introducing the registration of building inspectors.

Richard was also instrumental in establishing the Building Inspectors Proof of Competence pathway, which provides successful applicants with the evidence required to register with the BSR – CABE remains the only professional body to offer a Building Inspector Competency Assessment Scheme.

In addition to his previous experience as a Chartered Architect and working as a Policy Officer in MHCLG’s Building Regulations Division, Richard has a thorough understanding of the challenges and needs of professionals and the industry.

Commenting on his appointment, Richard said: “I am excited to lead in creating the next chapter of the Association’s history, with a strategy that helps support members to adapt to changing technologies, regulations and expectations.”

He continued: “Throughout CABE’s history, collaboration and knowledge sharing have been the cornerstones of the Association, and we will continue to ensure this. By supporting members and working with other professionals, we can help the construction industry raise standards and ensure a safe, sustainable and inclusive built environment.”

chapmanbdsp appoints Dr. Dorte Rich Joergensen

Construction services consultancy chapmanbdsp has announced the appointment of Dorte Rich Joergensen, Ph.D., FCIBSE, as an associate director on its sustainability team.

With a dynamic background spanning academia and industry, Dorte brings a wealth of expertise in innovating and developing sustainable solutions in the built environment.

Starting out as a mechanical services engineer in construction, Dorte brings extensive experience from his career with a strong focus on sustainability, completing a PhD on improving energy efficiency to close performance gaps. Consistently supports research and development while providing leadership in supporting sustainability as a function in commercial operations. Her passion is building high-performance teams with a culture where everyone can thrive.

In her new role at chapmanbdsp, Dorte will lead company-wide sustainability initiatives as well as foster collaboration across the industry.

Dorte Rich Joergensen, Ph.D., said: “I’m really excited to make a difference in how we deliver projects, provide the best customer service possible, and facilitate growth as everyone on the team expands their sustainability knowledge and experience.”

Macro appoints Kathryn Horton as chief operating officer

Global facilities management and workplace experience company Macro has named Kathryn Horton as chief operating officer. Kathryn has been a dedicated member of the team for the past four years, bringing with her a wealth of facilities management experience gained over 14 years.

Working with clients across Europe, Kathryn has demonstrated exceptional leadership and a deep understanding of the industry. In his new role as COO, he will focus on supporting his teams and driving the growth of Macro’s retail and technology portfolio.

Kathryn’s significant growth at Macro over the last four years is a strong testament to our unwavering commitment to supporting the success of our colleagues around the world. Checkers appoints Andy Hodgson as grounds manager

Soft service provider Checkers, part of the Churchill Group, has appointed Andy Hodgson as its new office director.

Andy will be the senior internal contact for all landscaping and landscaping inquiries, as well as managing key client relationships and generating new business. It will also take a strategic approach to identifying growth opportunities and ensuring Checkers meets all contractual, health and safety requirements.

Andy has over 20 years of experience in landscape management, with expertise in handling complex contracts and optimizing operational efficiency. He has worked with a number of high profile clients including local authorities, large companies and voluntary groups. His oversight of Tunbridge Wells Borough Council led to it receiving the Britain in Bloom National Award (Silvery Guilt) and the South & Southeast in Bloom Gold Award.

Andy said: “Chequers has a great reputation and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to lead the grounds maintenance and landscaping teams. I really enjoy strategizing and building strong relationships with clients, and Checkers is a perfect fit for this. I look forward to working with the team to identify growth opportunities and take Checkers to the next level.

Active Workplace Group welcomes new director Ben Martin

Director Ben Martin has joined Active’s board to play a hands-on role in taking the company to the next level. With over 25 years of experience in the office design and construction industry, Ben is well known for his ability to attract large enterprises and maximize the potential of the companies he works for, and now he plans to help Active do the same.

“I wasn’t really thinking about a career change, but when I happened to meet owners Colin and Adrian and started talking; their story was completely compelling,” Ben said. “Active has been in business for 25 years this year and has a high-profile clientele that belies their small size. The longevity of the company and the relationships they have with their customers is something that has really inspired me.”

Ben started his career in residential and commercial real estate and then moved into real estate development. Ben also set up his own fit-out company before joining one of the UK’s largest design and construction companies. Ben’s initial focus will be on developing the design and build side of Active, but he is also keen to promote and maximize Active’s unique space footprint, also offering removals, furniture and facilities management services.

OCS appoints David De Santiago as Group Director for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Services

OCS has announced the appointment of David De Santiago as its new Group Director for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Services. In this key role, David will lead the strategy and implementation of cutting-edge digital solutions leveraging the power of artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. His mission is to innovate, increase operational efficiency and make a tangible impact on OCS operations on the front lines, to the benefit of both colleagues and customers.

David De Santiago brings a wealth of experience to OCS, having spent over 17 years in the technology industry. His impressive achievements include leadership roles in both start-ups and large global organizations in the private and public sectors. In particular, David has played a key role in building the corporation’s market presence, shaping digital strategy and executing transformation initiatives.

Prior to joining OCS, David served as Global Director of Digital Innovation and Transformation at British American Tobacco (BAT). During his tenure, he founded the Innovation Center of Excellence and a global innovation program that impacted over 40,000 employees. Its strategic partnerships with large technology companies and collaborations with start-ups and venture capital ecosystems have played a key role in executing BAT’s transformation agenda and growth strategy.

David said: “I am excited to join OCS and lead the way in leveraging artificial intelligence and digital advances to revolutionize what we do. Together, we will redefine industry standards and create tangible value for our customers and stakeholders.”
