Origis Energy and TVA Announce Commercial Operation of Golden Triangle II

Golden Triangle II is a 150 MWac solar and 50 MW battery storage project that is the first of three Origis solar projects in Mississippi will be available online by 2025.

MIAMI, May 29, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Origis Energy and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) announced Wednesday that the first of three solar and storage projects at their Mississippi the portfolio achieved commercial operation. Golden Triangle II, a 150 MW AC photovoltaic project with 50 MW batteries, has begun producing emission-free electricity May 21, 2024.

“Solar energy is empowering Mississippi economic competitiveness, and Origis is removing barriers to a cleaner and brighter future by building clean energy infrastructure in the region,” he said Johan Vanhee, director of trade and purchasing at Origis. “Golden Triangle II is the first step in supporting a statewide zero-carbon economy that supports our nation’s economic goals and energy security.”

There are two other Origis renewable energy projects underway in the Magnolia State, Golden Triangle I, in Lowndes County200 MWac project with 50 MW battery storage and Optimist, in Clay County, a 200 MW AC and 50 MW energy storage project. It is the largest battery portfolio under construction in the state and helps TVA maintain its leadership in clean energy generation.

Upon completion in 2025, Origis Mississippi the clean energy complex will have a total capacity of 550 MW plus 150 MW of batteries. About 1.5 million solar panel modules will be installed across the three sites, enough to power about 126,000 homes.

“As a national leader in clean energy, TVA is leading the way in reducing carbon emissions across all sectors of the economy and providing the clean energy needed to fuel our region’s growth,” he said AmyTate, TVA director for the Southeast region. “Together with partners like Origis, TVA is developing carbon-free energy solutions that create jobs and investments in the communities we serve.”

Origis Energy, one of the leading U.S. providers of renewable energy and decarbonization solutions, has developed, built and will operate three projects for TVA. Each location will provide clean energy at competitive prices through power purchase agreements (PPAs) between TVA and Origis. TVA will use this power to help meet the energy needs and sustainability goals of some of its large industrial customers through its industry-leading Green Invest program, including Meta. Golden Triangle II will support Meta’s operations in the TVA area as part of the more than 1,000 MWac capacity that Meta has partnered with TVA on.

“Working with TVA through the Green Invest program has made it possible to support our operations in the Tennessee Valley with new solar power built in the region,” he said Urvi Parekh, head of the renewable energy department at Meta. “This solar farm is Meta’s first renewable energy project Mississippiand we are excited to bring it online.”

In the wake of the pandemic, TVA’s affordable, reliable and clean energy, combined with unprecedented migration to the area, has resulted in a rebound in economic growth in the region Golden Triangle will be 8% in 2021 and 3.5% in 2022. According to recent studies, this growth is expected to continue University of Tennessee Baker School study predicts the TVA region’s population will increase 22% by 2050.

Estimated economic benefits from the three projects include: $106 million in short-term construction and employment gains in the area. Throughout the life of the solar complex, they will provide another one $145 million in estimated regional economic benefits.

RES provides construction services to Origis across the portfolio, employing an estimated 500 people across the three projects. Once the plant is completed, Origis Energy Services will operate and maintain the plant portfolio with approximately 9 on-site employees throughout the project’s more than 35-year lifespan. Industrial-scale battery storage for each location is provided by Prevalon Energy, a rebrand of battery energy storage company Mitsubishi Power Americas.

Community leaders and development partners celebrated the announcement.

“Adding Golden Triangle II to Mississippi The ever-expanding renewable energy industry is a prime example of how a comprehensive approach to energy promotes innovation and productivity for Mississippians. I ran my campaign on one promise: to use all energy opportunities Mississippi with payers, reliability and the future of our country in mind. I am proud to welcome Golden Triangle II to the Northern District,” he said Chris BrownMississippi Public Service Commissioner, Northern District.

“The Origis facility is a huge solar farm, battery bank and substation. Its location, next door Golden Triangle the megaplex will provide renewable energy on a large scale. The project will also provide millions of dollars to our schools and county governments,” said Joe Max Higgins, Jr AICP, CEcD, CEO of CES GTR Link.

“RES is proud to be part of the team supporting Origis and TVA on Golden Triangle II and the rest of the portfolio to provide TVA customers with reliable, clean energy,” said AJ Jain, chief operating officer at RES. “In addition to local contractors, our nearly 500-person team has logged more than one million hours without a lost-time accident. Congratulations to the entire team!”

“The announcement by Origis Energy and TVA of the commercial operation of Golden Triangle II represents a significant milestone in our commitment to advancing clean energy solutions,” he said Tom Cornell, president and CEO of Prevalon Energy. “We are honored to be part of this project that enables more renewable energy to be produced in TVA’s service area. By generating emission-free electricity, this project not only supports Mississippi economic competitiveness, but also contributes to a cleaner and better future for the region. We are excited to be a part of this effort and look forward to continuing to support sustainable energy initiatives with Origis and TVA.”
