Fire Department of St. Jana reminds residents about the rules for smoking outdoors

With the arrival of warmer weather, outdoor recreational bonfires are becoming popular during the summer months. The Saint John Fire Department would like to remind residents of Saint John’s outdoor burning regulations.

City of Saint John Fire Codes:

  • Recreational fires may be confined to an approved retail establishment and/or a location that meets the listed requirements.
  • Property owners may burn approved materials for recreational purposes in an appropriate manner.
  • Approved materials include clean wood or wood products (no chemically treated wood or building materials).

Fire Department of St. Jana does not issue smoking permits. Burning for the purpose of clearing land, property or removing any material does not constitute a recreational fire and is prohibited.

Each city has its own regulations regarding outdoor fires. While the Province of New Brunswick issues burning permits and advises according to the conditions applicable in various areas of the province, New Brunswick towns are responsible for regulating and enforcing controlled outdoor burning within their municipal boundaries.

More information about outdoor fire safety can be found on the City of Saint John website.

Provincial regulations can be found on the New Brunswick Department of Environment and Local Government website.
