Canada came third – behind Mexico and Italy – in a 16-country survey commissioned by VPN provider NordVPN.

“We already knew that Canadians carry smartphones everywhere,” Adrianus Warmenhoven, cybersecurity advisor at NordVPN, said in a statement.

“Our previous study found that 66% of people living in Canada even bring their smartphones to the toilet. However, since smartphone use in a casual setting usually involves scrolling, people are less vigilant about online safety measures and appropriate safe behavior.”

The study found that most Canadians use more than three devices: smartphones (86%), televisions (40%) and laptops/computers (38%).

“Research has shown that Canadians’ number one activity in the morning is checking emails and messages, while in the evening they are scrolling through social media,” Warmenhoven said in a statement.

Additionally, 63% of Canadians check their emails and messages in bed, 56% believe that in-bed devices negatively impact their sleep, and only 30% of Canadians use bedtime mode.

Another 58% of Canadians browse social media, 53% watch videos, 48% talk to friends or family, 37% check the weather forecast, 36% read or listen to the news, 34% listen to music or podcasts, 32% love online shopping, and 31% playing video games.

The survey, conducted from February 12 to March 4, surveyed 15,600 people in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Poland and Japan.
