There’s a bad sign on the books with a big free agent acquisition

It will be at least a little longer before the Buffalo Bills have a chance to see what new free agent acquisition Mike Edwards can do on the field.

The safety signed with the Bills in March and was expected to compete for a starting spot, but was hampered by a lingering shoulder injury and was seen wearing a sling during the team’s May 28 practice. Bills head coach Sean McDermott has already warned that it will be several weeks before Edwards will be able to participate in live workouts, but Tuesday’s photos could mean he still has a lot of work ahead of him.

Mike Edwards still needs to practice

The Bills launched OTAs this month, but Edwards has not yet been able to participate. ESPN reporter Alaina Getzenberg shared a photo of Edwards walking on the field Tuesday with a slingshot over his shoulder.

McDermott previously said Edwards is still dealing with the effects of the injury but is expected to be fully healthy before training camp this summer.

“I should add that Mike is currently dealing with a minor shoulder injury for the next three to four weeks. Other than that, he was a good addition to our team,” McDermott told reporters May 21 via SI.com.

The Bills are dealing with other injuries on defense, including linebacker Matt Milano, who is still rehabbing from a broken leg he suffered in October. McDermott did not provide an exact timetable for Milano’s return, but expressed confidence that he would be back in time for training camp.

“I’ve been told by our coaching staff that he’s on schedule,” McDermott said on the team’s official website. “Matt is here every day. I can say that he works hard. He’ll probably be closer to training camp until we see him on the field, maybe there will be drills before then, maybe not. At this stage he will just continue to progress.”

A big role for the new security

Edwards has a chance to fill the void at safety left by the departures of longtime players Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer. Hyde considered returning to Buffalo for another season, but CBS Sports noted that Edwards could still count on the starting job even if he returns.

“After signing a one-year deal in March, Edwards has a good chance of starting safely, and Buffalo has not yet attempted to re-sign longtime secondary mainstay Micah Hyde, who is currently without a team and is a moot point. “Mark has returned to football due to long-term neck problems,” the report said. “Even if Hyde returns to the Bills, a younger and healthier Edwards may still be the team’s preferred starter.”

Edwards is coming off a season with the Kansas City Chiefs in which he totaled 51 tackles, including one interception and five passes defended. He also made two rebounds, one of which he returned for a touchdown.
