Precision when it counts, with Mazda’s gadget

The Mazda CX-60 3.3L Takumi with automatic all-wheel drive subtly lives up to its name by joining Mazda’s SUV lineup.

Takumi symbolizes dexterity and precision, in line with the tradition of master craftsmanship in Japan. This subtlety extends from the steering – which can feel overly stiff at first until it develops a sense of precision – to the Bose sound system, which not only delivers clear and immersive sound, but also customizable settings that enable a personalized listening experience.

Dexterity is not included in the on-board technology package, however, as the 12.3-inch TFT LCD center display, which should act as the command center for the Mazda Connect infotainment system, does not have touch functionality. This means it has to be controlled via a knob next to the gear lever, which creates distance and dissonance between the screen and the controls. At this price level, a touchscreen is expected.

The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay technology, but requires a plug-in for Android Auto, so smartphone integration is not completely seamless. That said, once connected, it always connects seamlessly and remembers you every time you connect. The same cannot be said for many other wireless systems in higher-end vehicles. The wireless charging pad is useful for charging if you connect your iPhone wirelessly or your passenger wants to charge their phone. Two USB-C ports at the front and rear suggest that the car is future-proof.

The on-board navigation system is relatively user-friendly given the lack of a touchscreen, and provides real-time traffic updates. That said, mapping on smartphones is always better than the mapping available in any car on the market.

Safety is a priority, so the Advanced Driver Monitoring System with Driver Attention Alert uses an infrared camera to detect signs of driver drowsiness or inattention. Other safety features include adaptive LED headlights that adjust the light pattern to suit driving conditions, and a 360-degree transparent view monitor that makes parking and maneuvering in tight spaces easier.

Mazda’s radar cruise control requires a lot of dexterity. Add features like intersection brake assist, passive collision alert, blind spot monitoring, rear and front cross traffic alert, distance alert, rear, front and side radar, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning and all security basics. covered.

A head-up display (HUD) projects critical information onto the windshield, theoretically allowing drivers to stay informed without taking their eyes off the road. In practice, you can’t use it in bright daylight – especially if you’re wearing sunglasses. However, it works great at night.

Comfort is another clue to the precision of the car’s design. A dual-zone automatic climate control system keeps the cabin comfortable for both driver and passenger, although it would be useful to have air conditioning in the rear.

The interior is a combination of luxury and practicality, with high-quality materials such as black Nappa leather upholstery and metal inserts giving the cabin an exclusive feel. Storage options add to the sense of well-thought-out design, with ample door bins and a deep storage compartment under the center armrest. The trunk offers an impressive 477 liters of space, which increases to 1,726 liters with the rear seats folded.

The highlight of the CX-60 is a 12-speaker Bose sound system with settings like Centerpoint and AudioPilot designed to precisely localize sound and reduce road noise. Centerpoint uses an improved algorithm to convert stereo signals into multiple channels, allowing for greater audio precision and creating a wider, more spacious sound field. AudioPilot automatically adjusts the music to compensate for ambient noise.

The car’s performance is smooth and responsive, with the 3.3-litre inline-six turbocharged diesel engine delivering 187kW of power and 550Nm of torque. This ensures sufficient power when starting and a refined driving experience on highways. Accelerating at cruising speed has a slight but noticeable lag, and the suspension isn’t overly sensitive to bumps, but handles potholes comfortably. In other words, it works when it matters.

The CX-60’s 3.3L engine features 48V mild hybrid technology for excellent fuel economy.

The Mazda CX-60 is a strong competitor in the SUV market, combining advanced safety features with a luxurious interior and solid performance. While there are areas for improvement, such as the integration of more intuitive touch controls, the overall package is impressive and delivers a refined driving experience.
