What is mesh forming technology

Grid-Forming is a revolutionary technology designed to ensure stable and reliable operation of power grids, especially in the context of the integration of renewable energy and decentralized networks. Instead of traditional systems that follow the grid, mesh technology actively regulates grid frequency and voltage, ensuring grid stability even during power outages or when disconnected from the central grid. It uses sophisticated control algorithms, power electronic converters, energy storage systems and communication networks to seamlessly manage network conditions and integrate renewable energy sources. This pioneering system increases network resilience, offers jump start capabilities and guarantees continuous and reliable power supply.

Hopewind’s achievements in mesh forming technology

As a pioneer in mesh formation technology, Hopewind participated in the Wingrid research project, supported by the EU’s Horizon 2020 program through DNV laboratory in the Netherlands. In 2023, the Hopewind wind energy converter received the world’s first grid formation certification from DNV. In November, the world’s first grid wind farm using Hopewind converters was launched Gansu, China.

Expanding in Solar energy

Hopewind’s commitment to innovation extends beyond wind energy; grid formation technology is also integrated with a state-of-the-art 385 kW photovoltaic inverter. The world’s most powerful in its class, this inverter offers critical capabilities for utility-scale solar projects. Black start functionality, active voltage/frequency regulation and seamless grid connection improve overall grid resilience and enable greater renewable energy penetration. The inverter’s reactive power control and transient stability features further enhance grid stability, making it the optimal choice for large-scale photovoltaic installations. Additionally, the inverter can operate at high ambient temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius without derating. It uses SiC-based components to improve temperature adaptability, switching speed and voltage rating.

In recognition of the outstanding performance of this innovative product, Hopewind’s 385 kW grid-forming photovoltaic inverter has been shortlisted for the prestigious Smart E Award 2024, which will be announced at the upcoming Intersolar Europe 2024 exhibition.
