The first panel of the 10th Spanish-Moroccan Maritime, Transport and Logistics Meeting brought together Baleària and the port authorities of Tangier Med and Algeciras Bay to discuss the challenges facing these key sectors for the economies of both countries.

Georges Bassoul, CEO of Baleària, urged participants to choose digitalization and innovation to improve their performance and increase the quality of services; emphasizing digital practices and a powerful and active control system that allows for risk avoidance and better sector planning.

“Baleària is an entity that has been operating in the Kingdom of Morocco for 20 years; and, like other companies, faces enormous challenges in a changing world in search of innovative solutions to continue to best serve the customers who trust us,” Bassoul explained.

According to the CEO, the Spanish company based in Morocco focuses on digitalization and innovation to offer up-to-date, well-organized services with the best possible quality by optimizing operational processes at various stages.

“Another key element for Baleària is punctuality; Therefore, the company strives to keep ship schedules and make them reasonable, transparent and timely, thanks to efficient and quick cooperation and communication with the administration, authorities and other services,’ added the representative of Baleària.

Regarding Baleària’s achievements, Georges Bassoul highlighted the option of using liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a transition fuel towards a decarbonized future; emphasizing that Baleària’s ships emit 30% less CO2.

Rafael Olivares, Deputy Director of Operations at the Port of Algeciras Bay, highlighted the growth recorded in the first half of 2024 thanks to a strategy based on four pillars:

  • Infrastructure with a number of works and investments such as a new sea station, complete modernization of existing lines and expansion of railway tracks.

  • Traffic management at maximum occupancy levels but striving to improve efficiency.

  • Compliance with punctuality, procedures and waiting times.

  • Innovation by choosing a digital operations management platform that ensures ease, efficiency and traceability of the entire physical and documentary logistics process.

Human capital, digitalization and punctuality, three keys to the success of Tanger Med

The Tanger Med Port Authority, represented by Idriss Aarabi, Director of Import-Export and Railway Operations, explained the factors that made the Tanger Med project a success thanks to:

  • Partnerships with major international operators that have allowed Morocco to gain a better position on the global maritime map.
  • Human capital, 100% Moroccan, working in various companies and maritime authorities (10,000 people); in addition to 15,000 workers in the industrial zones of Tanger Med.
  • A digital management system covering all services and enabling physical and documentary tracking.

Renault’s strategy is based on digitalization

For his part, Khalid Ramy, Head of Renault Morocco’s International Transport Division, shed light on the company’s strategy to increase production and efficiency with the aim of achieving operational efficiency.

“Innovation and digitalization initiatives have had a very positive impact on economic efficiency through data analytics that facilitate planning, traceability, accuracy, risk management and error reduction; without losing sight of the importance of consolidating storage capacity,” – Ramy concluded.

Khadija Tamba, CEO of the Maroc Force Emploi Group, highlighted the importance of digitalization for the maritime, transport and logistics sectors, calling it “a change that we all must embrace.”

“Digitalization is the path we started in 2016 to have a virtual human resources monitoring system, effectively manage human capital to respond to customer needs; through personalized services operating remotely, Tamba explained.

The company, as reported by a representative of Maroc Force Emploi, accompanies investors in the first stage of the recruitment process and encourages them not to be satisfied with looking in large cities, while there are other regions where they can find highly qualified skills and human resources.

“In this regard, the company is reaching out to over 6,000 people with the campaign through its intelligence cell; this facilitates recruitment and reduces the unemployment rate in other regions of the Kingdom,” added Khadija Tamba.

Decarbonization is the biggest challenge in maritime transport and logistics

Mourad Erraguragui, vice-president of the Moroccan International Road Transport Association (AMTRI), highlighted the green strategy that goes hand in hand with digitalization, aiming to decarbonize and dematerialize these sectors through clean energy and electronic documentation.
