How to remove and rename devices in Find My Device on Android

Find My Device on Android will become a lot more useful with the advent of tracking devices, but the app can quickly become crowded with old devices. Here’s how to remove and rename devices shown in Find My Device on Android.

There are currently no device controls in the Find My Device app for Android. At least for phones and audio devices. You can rename trackers and edit them, but everything else remains unchanged.

Fortunately, there are several ways to remedy this.

First, you can access Find My Device via the Internet.

At google.com/android/find you can click on any device and in the settings menu change the device name to whatever you want. The default name on most devices will be the same as the product name, but some will be different and use the model number instead of the actual product name.

Another option is to use the “My Device” menu in the Google Play Store.

This page, available online at play.google.com/library/devices, lists all the devices you’ve signed in to. On this page, you can similarly rename devices and also list TVs and Chromebooks. You typically use this page to edit your device’s display name in the Play Store web app installer, but it also syncs with the Find My Device app.

You can also easily remove devices from Find My Device on Android on the same page.

If you uncheck “Show in menu” on devices you don’t want to be shown, they will soon disappear from the Android app. Please note that this also applies to the Play Store online client.

These changes usually sync almost immediately, but sometimes it may take a few tries or a few minutes of waiting.

The only devices that cannot be easily removed from Find My Device on Android are Bluetooth audio devices. To remove them, you need to use one of the devices you paired the headphones or speaker with and remove them from there manually.

To rename a tracker, simply open the tracker in the app, tap settings, and you’ll be able to rename it and even set its category.

We hope that future updates will make this easier and also allow you to reorganize the list.
