Kohl’s (KSS) Reports First Quarter Loss, Skip Revenue Estimates

Kohl’s (KSS) came out with quarterly loss of $0.24 per share versus the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.04. For comparison, a year earlier earnings per share were $0.13. These numbers have been adjusted for one-off items.

This quarterly report presented an earnings surprise of -700%. A quarter ago, it was expected that this department store operator would post earnings of $1.24 per share when it actually produced earnings of $1.67, delivering a surprise of 34.68%.

The company has topped consensus EPS estimates three times over the last four quarters.

Kohl’s, which belongs to the Zacks Retail – Regional Department Stores industry, posted revenues of $3.38 billion for the quarter ended April 2024, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 4.47%. For comparison, year-ago revenues were $3.57 billion. The company has failed to beat consensus revenue estimates over the last four quarters.

The sustainability of the immediate share price movement based on the recently-released numbers and future earnings expectations will largely depend on management’s commentary on the earnings call.

Kohl’s shares have lost about 5% since the beginning of the year compared to the S&P 500’s gain of 10.4%.
