The American Institute of Design and Construction (DBIA) announced the publication of an updated Transportation and Aviation Design and Construction Best Practices Manual, which follows last year’s refresh of universal best practices and updated federal sector best practices introduced earlier this year.

Recognizing the need for sector-specific guidance, the new handbook is designed to offer practical insights for design and construction teams facing distinct challenges in transportation and aviation projects.

“The transportation and aviation market sectors have experienced significant growth and transformation in recent years,” said Bill Hasbrook, chair of the DBIA Transportation and Aviation Markets Task Force.

“As this sector has evolved, it has become necessary to review and update DBIA best practices specific to transportation and aviation projects.”

DBIA’s commitment to maintaining industry-standard design and construction resources, education and certification programs has led to the evolution of these best practices. The primer has been updated since its 2016 release by experienced design and construction experts whose extensive experience in transportation and aviation projects has fed into the new guidance.

“Staying ahead of constant innovation and rapid evolution in the design-build sector is crucial. Our revised best practices reflect the current state of the industry and incorporate important insights from key stakeholders,” Hasbrook said.

The review process was thorough and collaborative. The DBIA Transportation and Aviation Markets Committee has formed a task force composed of former and current directors, owners, practitioners and legal experts. Additionally, recommendations were obtained from various industry partners.

“A comprehensive review and update was necessary to include aviation and ensure compliance with universal best practices published last year,” Hasbrook explained. “Our goal was to create a document that not only reflects universal guidelines, but also addresses the specific needs of the transport and aviation sectors.”

Key updates to the handbook include improved procurement, contracting and execution techniques, all tailored to the transportation and aviation design and construction sectors. The primer now reflects the framework of universal best practices, enriching it with sector-specific insights.

The updated Transportation and Aviation Design and Construction Best Practices Manual is now available for free download from the DBIA online bookstore.
