European Sustainable Energy Week sets the target for net zero competitiveness

The upcoming European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) will continue to promote sustainable energy policies, practices and initiatives across the continent, while seeking solutions that contribute to its competitiveness.

18th edition of the event titled Net zero energy solutions for a competitive Europelasts from June 11 to 13 in the capital of Belgium, Brussels, and its proceedings can also be broadcast online.

It will include a high-level policy conference, the EUSEW Awards and the fifth European Youth Energy Day and “connection opportunities with the EUSEW community” at the Energy Fair.

The EUSEW 2024 conference will take place against the backdrop of net zero progress in Europe, and this year’s edition of the European Electricity Review by independent energy think tank Ember has shown a continent-wide decline in fossil fuel consumption by 19% in 2023 and an increase in renewable energy sources to 44 % share in its energy mix – exceeding 40% for the first time.

Revealing the data in February, Sarah Brown, European program director at Ember, said: “Coal is on the verge of being phased out, and as wind and solar power grows, gas will be the next to see final decline. However, this is not the time to become complacent. The EU needs to focus on the rapid deployment of wind, solar and flexibility to create a fossil fuel-free system.”

CINEA says about the conference: “The sessions organized by the European Commission and energy industry stakeholders will focus on sustainable energy issues and discuss new policies, best practices and ideas for sustainable energy.”

He adds: “The annual event is an opportunity to meet with stakeholders promoting energy efficiency and renewable energies, learn about effective actions and policies, and inspire innovation to achieve the EU’s energy and climate goals.”

The conference is supported by the European Sustainable Energy Awards, which recognize outstanding individuals and projects for their innovation and efforts in energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. Prizes will be awarded in the Innovation, Local Energy Action and Women in Energy categories, with the winners announced at the awards ceremony on June 11.

Elsewhere, the fifth European Youth Energy Day will enable young people aged 18-34 to share their vision for Europe’s energy future, while the Energy Fair will provide participants and stakeholders with a wider opportunity to exchange ideas on policies and best practices.

Sustainable Energy Days will also be held around the world “to engage with local communities and other green changemakers in Europe and beyond.
