A Beijing man accused of possessing a homemade weapon

PEORIA, Ill. – A Beijing man accused of possessing homemade pipe bombs and weapons is in federal custody.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of Illinois says 34-year-old Dalton Mattus has been charged with unlawful possession of homemade explosives and possession of a firearm.

Police allegedly found a padlocked bag in the passenger compartment of Mattus’ car during a May 17 traffic stop, along with several syringes and a small scale. Police reportedly found a stolen handgun and two homemade destructive devices in the bag.

Prosecutors say the devices were cylinder-shaped and equipped with yellow pyrotechnic detonators, covered on both sides with metal balls mixed with weapons.

A search subsequently conducted at Mattus’ apartment allegedly revealed three additional explosive devices, live firearm ammunition and additional materials for the construction of destructive devices.

Mattus faces up to 15 years in federal prison.

He was previously detained by a Tazewell County judge in state court, but a federal detention hearing will be held on June 4.
