The Indian energy sector reaches a record demand of 250 GW, which was met on May 30

A significant achievement for the Indian power sector was the meeting of a record maximum power demand of 250 GW on Thursday, May 30. Moreover, India’s total non-solar energy demand also touched an all-time high of 234.3 GW on Wednesday, reflecting the Ministry of Power said in a release that the combined impact of weather stresses and rising industrial and residential energy consumption in these areas .

According to the Ministry of Energy, the northern region also achieved a record level of demand fulfillment, reaching an all-time high of 86.7 GW on Thursday, while the western region also achieved a maximum realized demand of 74.8 GW.

“In addition, thermal power generation across India has reached an all-time high, peaking at 176 GW (excluding buses), especially during non-sunny hours. A key contributor to this was the strategic implementation of Section 11, which was facilitated by maximizing generation from imported coal and gas plants.

“This growth further highlights the significant capacity and operational efficiency of India’s thermal power plants, which continue to form the backbone of the country’s energy mix,” the ministry said.

The ministry further added that support from renewable energy sources, especially solar power during sunny hours and wind power during non-sunny hours, also plays a major role in meeting demand.

These achievements are a testament to the coordinated efforts of various stakeholders in the power sector, including government agencies, power generation companies and network operators.

Their involvement in increasing generation capacity, optimizing resource allocation and implementing policies has played a key role in meeting the country’s energy needs
