Renewable natural gas for Cemex US trucks in Southern California

Construction materials company Cemex and transportation fuel supplier Clean Energy Fuels Corp. announced the latter’s agreement to supply renewable natural gas (RNG) to power 39 Cemex US ready-mix and cement trucks in Southern California. RNG is a negative carbon intensity transportation fuel that significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 300 percent compared to diesel fuel, Cemex claims.

Cemex said the deal is expected to provide approximately 300,000 gallons of RNG per year to its fleet, which will have access to the fuel through Clean Energy’s network of public stations in Southern California.

Additionally, Cenex said Clean Energy will launch a private fueling station in Rialto, California, exclusively for Cemex’s growing RNG fleet. The new station will be equipped with timed dispensers and a dedicated quick-filling dispenser, enabling easy and economical refueling. The construction project is expected to be completed by the end of this year, and Cemex trucks will be refueled on site shortly thereafter. Clean energy supplies RNG to the new privately owned station and operates and maintains the facility.

This transition to RNG is part of Cemex’s Future in Action program, which the company says is focused on achieving sustainable excellence through climate action, circularity and natural resource management. The main goal of the program is to achieve the status of a company with net zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2050. Cemex says Cemex is projected to reduce fleet greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 8,822 metric tons of CO2 equivalent per year, which, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Greenhouse Gas Equivalence Calculator, is equivalent to taking 1,981 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles off the road for a period of one year or planting 137,648 trees.

“Using renewable fuels is not just an option; it’s a necessity,” said Francisco Rivera, Cemex U.S. regional president for the Western region. “What Cemex provides is essential to building communities in California and across the country. By leveraging Clean Energy’s renewable energy resources, we are accelerating our aggressive sustainability goals, inspiring innovation, supporting resilience and building a legacy of responsible stewardship for future generations.
