Manitoba releases latest crop pest update – 620 CKRM

Insects: Both striped and cruciferous beetles are present. High levels of damage were reported in most areas
rapeseed are minimal so far. In some areas of the Northwest, fleas are starting to reach a population threshold
rapeseed has appeared and farmers are starting to use insecticides. In some regions farmers and
agronomists commented on flea beetle numbers and feeding on rapeseed and other cruciferous plants
fewer plants than last year. Some corn worms have been reported in a sunflower field in the central part of the country
region, but without serious damage. Wireworms and damage caused by their feeding have been observed on some types of wheat
Southwest region.

Disease: Rainfall across Manitoba has been well above normal since early May
with lower than average Crop Day accumulations, we tend to see more seedling disease
than in other years. This has not happened so far in 2024. Has a series of dry growing seasons led to:
reducing the amount of inoculum carried by stubble? Or maybe the environmental conditions were not conducive to infection?

Weeds: The cold weather and rain/snow last week has slowed weed growth a bit, but weeds like wild oats
are really common. When sowing, be aware of surrounding crops when spraying burn products. Many
crops have appeared that are susceptible to spray drift, especially in the case of glyphosate. There are strong winds during spraying
contributed to some drift problems in emerging crops.
