iOS 18 release date: when to expect the beta and public launch

We’re not far from the first official look at iOS 18 at WWDC 2024 on June 10. Whether you want to test the new operating system as soon as the developer beta is available, or you wait for the public beta or public launch, keep track of when you can expect the iOS 18 release date.

Apple traditionally reveals its major iOS updates during its WWDC keynote and launches the first beta for developers within hours.

Then the first free public beta of iOS usually launches about a month later, and the official public release arrives shortly after the fall iPhone event.

The upcoming new version of iOS is expected to feature major AI improvements, including on-device processing, an improved version of Siri, smart integration with Messages, Apple Music, iWork, and more.

iOS 18 Release Date: Developer Beta

Apple traditionally releases the first beta of each major iOS update to developers on the same day as its annual WWDC keynote.

  • WWDC kicks off with a keynote on June 10. Expect the first developer beta of iOS 18 to be released shortly thereafter unless Apple changes the situation

Here’s a look at the last five years of beta developer releases:

  • iOS 17 developer beta 1: June 5
  • iOS 16 developer beta 1: June 6
  • iOS 15 developer beta 1: June 7
  • iOS 14 Developer Beta 1: June 22 (delayed due to pandemic)
  • iOS 13 developer beta 1: June 3

Public beta

  • The first public beta of iOS typically arrives four to five weeks after the first developer beta launches in June. Historically, this has been the case from the end of June to the beginning of July.

Here’s a look at the last few years:

Official public release

  • It is probable iOS 18 will be released in mid or late September unless Apple throws us a curve ball
  • If Apple holds an iPhone 16 event on September 9-17, we can expect the official launch of iOS 18 on September 16-23.

Here’s an overview of iOS releases from the last four years:

  • iOS 17: September 18, 2023 (after September 12)
  • iOS 16: September 16, 2022 (after September 7 event)
  • iOS 15: September 20, 2021 (after September 14)
  • iOS 14: September 16, 2020 (after September 15 event)

Since iOS betas can be installed directly from iPhone Settings (as of iOS 16.4), trying out iOS 18 in June will be smooth and easy.
