The deadline for submitting written comments on proposed changes to New Hampshire’s landfill regulations is Wednesday, June 5 at 4 p.m.

The proposed rules were subject to a May 20 public hearing at the Department of Environmental Services, where residents and environmentalists expressed concerns that the regulations were still weaker than those in neighboring states, according to the Justice Department. A number of proposed regulations address the role of water in landfills – and especially leachate, the contaminated liquid created by water festering in or flowing through waste.

The new regulations require leachate collection systems to be double-walled and equipped with high water level alarm monitors. They also call for stormwater management systems at landfills to withstand 50-year storm events.
