Italy-Tunisia, Aslan Berjeb (Conect) in Nova: “Interesting cooperation in the agri-food sector”

In the Palazzo della Borsa, which houses the Chamber of Commerce of Catania, a meeting entitled “Agri-food: investment and business opportunities between Sicily and Tunisia” has just ended on investment opportunities between Italy and in particular the region of Sicily and the North Africa of the country in the sector agri-food. Participants included the President of the Regional Assembly of Sicily, Gaetano Galvagno, the Ambassador of the Republic of Tunisia in Rome, Mourad Bourehla, the President of the Confederation of Tunisia’s Civic Enterprises (Conect), and the President of the Tunisian-Italian Chamber of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Mourad Fradi. “The event was organized by the Tunisian Embassy in Rome in cooperation with the Tunisian Consulate in Palermo, under the aegis of the Region of Sicily and with the support of two Tunisian government bodies, the Foreign Investment Promotion Agency (Fipa) and the Center for Export Promotion (Cepex),” explains the president of Conect, Aslan Berjeb, “Agenzia Nova”, describing the meeting as “extremely interesting because, through b2b, the initiative connected Italian entrepreneurs with their Tunisian counterparts in the agriculture and food industry.”

“We also dealt with specific sectors such as hydroponics, which is an agricultural activity that takes into account the environmental situation, including water deficit,” adds Berjeb, emphasizing that drought, deepened by the disastrous effects of climate change, as well as the lack of water “is a known phenomenon in Tunisia, but also in many other countries in the region. Berjeb reveals that the Catania meeting will be followed by a second meeting scheduled in Tunisia “to further develop trade flows between both countries and create new investment opportunities.” The agri-food sector in Tunisia represents approximately 12 percent of GDP, with 1,020 enterprises employing more than 10 employees, of which approximately 200 produce exclusively for export. These are mainly SMEs, located throughout the country and close to agricultural areas or major urban centers. There are 73,770 workers employed, representing approximately 14 percent of those employed in the manufacturing sector, of which approximately 16,800 (22.7 percent) are employed in wholly exporting companies. According to the Iaa Nat 2009 product classification, there are 30 agri-food sub-sectors in Tunisia, nine of which are related to beverages alone.
