BJP’s ‘Corrupt’ Politics Continues to Threaten Citizens’ Lives: Cong on Rajkot Fire

Ahmedabad, June 1 The Gujarat Congress on Saturday said the “corrupt” policies of the Gujarat government continue to endanger the lives of citizens and also demanded action against officials responsible for the fire at the Rajkot TRP Gaming Zone that killed 27 people.

“Despite ruling Gujarat for 30 years, the BJP’s corrupt policies continue to threaten the lives of citizens. The recurring accidents are a direct result of the government’s inaction and lack of clear fire safety policy and regulations, said Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Manish Doshi.

He also accused the authorities of negligence after the TRP Game Zone fire incident and called for the resignation of urban development officials. “Criminal negligence charges should be brought against senior officials,” he said.

Doshi slammed the Gujarat government for its “repeated failure” to prevent such disasters despite numerous fires across the state.

He also accused the state government of “corruption” and “compromise” on fire safety measures, leading to “superficial compliance” and numerous “irregularities” in fire safety clearances.

“Gujarat needs 394 fire stations to serve its people and we have only 183 stations. Gujarat needs 34,240 fire brigade personnel but has only 1,447 operational personnel, which is just 4.5% of the requirement. Of the 1,467 essential fire-fighting equipment, only 770 are available, of which over 250 are not functional,” Doshi said.

He said that between 2018 and 2022, 3,176 people died in Gujarat due to fire-related accidents.

“There have been 3,100 fires in the last five years, including 729 in 2021 and 2022, killing 737 people,” he said.

He said major fires in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot had caused significant loss of life, yet the government’s response had been inadequate.
