I’ve never been someone who wanted to travel with a portable router in my bag. Dealing with the complexity of connecting to different networks and the fact that many hotels have moved away from Ethernet to exclusively Wi-Fi. That was until I started using AirCove Go. From now on, it is a permanent element of my travel bag.

About Apple@Work: Bradley Chambers managed the corporate IT network from 2009 to 2021. With his experience implementing and managing firewalls, switches, mobile device management, enterprise-grade Wi-Fi, thousands of Macs and thousands of iPads, Bradley will show how Apple IT Managers deploy Apple devices, build networks to support them, train users , stories from the trenches of IT management, and how Apple can improve its products for IT departments.

What makes AirCove Go the perfect router for business travel?

As I mentioned at the beginning, one of the reasons I have never traveled with a portable router is the complexity of setting it up in each hotel. Aircove Go completely eliminates the need for a wired Ethernet connection. Wi-Fi Link allows you to wirelessly connect to any local network, including those with “captive portals” that often make it difficult to connect streaming devices and similar devices.

With Aircove Go, there’s no need to manually connect each device to Wi-Fi or switch between multiple VPN apps. Any device you connect to Aircove Go will remember it and automatically reconnect as soon as it comes within range.

In addition to the simplicity of connecting all your devices to your hotel Wi-Fi network, AirCove Go also provides a layer of security. There are always concerns about privacy and security when using public Wi-Fi networks. For business travelers or remote workers, security is something to think about in every location.

Imagine this: you’re in a hotel room and you want to connect to Wi-Fi securely. Aircove Go becomes your trusted connection, offering a secure, private Wi-Fi bubble that travels with you wherever you go. Whether you’re in a hotel, Airbnb, or coworking space, AirCove Go keeps your online activities protected from man-in-the-middle attacks on the connection you’re using

Even devices that don’t typically support VPN apps, such as game consoles, smart locks, and some smart TVs, are protected when they use AirCove Go.

Setup experience

I waited to unpack the AirCove Go until my business trip to see how easy it was. Once you unpack it, you’ll see how small it is. It has no external antennas and is about as large as some of the larger MagSafe batteries.

I plugged it in and connected it to the new SSID I created. You will find the SSID and password on the bottom of the device. Once you have the SSID, you will go to expressvpnrouter.com to start setup. It will go a little faster if you can connect your device to an Ethernet network, but this is certainly not necessary. As I mentioned earlier, you can connect Aircove Go to another Wi-Fi connection and use it as an intermediary between your public Wi-Fi network and all your devices. Connecting your device to Express VPN was really easy and you can choose from a long list of locations.

I took my Apple TV with me on this trip and it connected immediately and bypassed the new one so I could use the hotel’s captive portal.

End

Aircove Go includes Wi-Fi 6, so it can deliver wireless speeds of up to 1,200 Mbps on 5 GHz and 600 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. Overall this is a great device, perfect for someone who spends a lot of time in hotels. Instead of manually connecting your Mac, iPhone, iPad, etc. to your hotel Wi-Fi network, just connect Aircove Go and you’re ready to go. It’s not strong enough for where I’d like to use it at home, but it’s not designed for that. It’s designed to be a portable VPN router, and it does a great job at it.

You can purchase Aircove Go on Amazon and it comes with a free 30-day ExpressVPN trial.
