Governor DeSantis signs bill placing restrictions on red light camera programs

Republican Sen. Alexis Calatayud and Republican Demi Busatta Cabrera spoke in favor of the legislation.

Local authorities that want to impose red light cameras on citizens will have to be more transparent about the process, the governor said. Ron DeSantis signed the law setting the parameters on Friday.

HB 1363which passed the Senate and House earlier this year without a single “no” vote, sets new requirements for these controversial devices.

Local authorities are required to produce annual reports on their activities regarding traffic violation sensors at public gatherings.

Similarly, local legislative bodies are required to approve the procurement of these devices at a publicly announced meeting.

Failure to comply with these requirements means that your local jurisdiction is prohibited from using these devices by regulation.

Additionally, the regulations impose temporary measures on locations that might wish to contract with companies from China or from other so-called “foreign countries of concern” (the Russian Federation, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the Republic of Cuba, the government of Venezuela or the Syrian Arab Republic ), including any agency or other entity exercising significant control over such foreign country.” engaged in speed camera activities after July 1, 2025

A Republican senator supported the bill. Alexis Calatayud and Rep. Demi Busatta Cabrera.

“The bill provides us with appropriate transparency and reporting requirements as the number of red light cameras increases across the state,” Busatta Cabrera texted Florida Politics in response to questions about the bill earlier this year. “We must ensure these programs are implemented to promote public safety, not to profit from hardworking Floridians.”

Even if you’ve never been to China, you’ve probably been caught on camera by a Chinese company. Hikivision, which started as a Chinese state-owned entity and maintains close ties to Chinese leaders, has captured 12% of the North American street surveillance market, The matter was reported by “Atlantyk”..
