One of the most dangerous red tape-cutting projects in the world

Minecraft is undoubtedly one of the most played titles in the world. This sandbox game was launched in 2011 and has attracted a huge fan base since then. In fact, this title is more than a game, in which you can literally build your own world.

From spending time virtually with your favorite people to having a debate in the gaming world, you can do it all. However, there is another huge aspect to this game that no title could have ever achieved. Gaming and all is well and good, but have you ever wondered if a game could be the pillar of uncensored journalism around the world?

Welcome to the uncensored library of Minecraft

Journalism is one of the four pillars of democracy in democratic countries. It is the main way we can find out about everything that is happening in the world. Yet in some countries, censorship stifles journalism, so the true saga is not revealed.

It’s there Minecraft comes into play. In this game there is a place called The Uncensored Library. Now what is it? The Uncensored Library is a virtual library that provides access to censored books and articles. It was created by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and BlockWorks, a Minecraft design collective, to give young gamers in countries with strict press censorship rules access to independent journalism.

The library was published on March 12, 2020, World Day Against Cybercensorship. It contains approximately 300 books divided into twelve wings, each representing a country where information may be limited. The library includes banned reporting from countries including Mexico, Russia, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Brazil and Eritrea.

Why is the Uncensored Library necessary?

In many countries, mainstream journalism is repressed to some extent, if not completely. Several articles, blogs and other popular news content are banned due to specific censorship rules in the respective countries. But in The Uncensored Library you can find all media content that is banned and absolutely free to read.

This library is accessible to everyone. You just need to download the map from the official server and connect to the Minecraft server. In this library we can see many famous names of journalism around the world. For example, Yulia Berezovskaia is a Russian journalist who runs Grani.ru, which is blocked in her country.

Another example is that of Nguyen Van Dai, a Vietnamese blogger, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Arab journalist Hatice Cengiz is also part of this library. Her husband was also a well-known Saudi dissident journalist who was killed by Saudi government agents at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

The Uncensored Library Minecraft is a tremendous and unique initiative that has the potential to reveal the whole truth that has been deliberately left out. What is your opinion on this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
