Myrtle Beach police expand crackdown on nuisance neighborhoods

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – The Myrtle Beach Police Department and the city are expanding their efforts to combat nuisance neighborhoods where crime has become a problem.

WMBF Investigates, through a Freedom of Information Act request, uncovered a Myrtle Beach police investigation that led to a drug and gun bust in the Futrell Park community.

It’s unclear exactly when the seizure took place, but documents show it happened in September.

Deputy City Manager Josh Bruegger announced that they appointed community officers to the Futrell Park community following complaints from the community over the past year.

It was those complaints that prompted a recent investigation of a home in the neighborhood where police said they found marijuana, crack, cocaine and three guns.

Breugger said this type of activity is common in the area.

“That’s why we put neighborhood officers here. This was a relatively new addition, so we can build that relationship with the community,” Breugger said. “Earn the trust of the community and work together to address nuisance, crime, violent crime and resident concerns.”

People living in the area claim that they did not see any activity.

“I stop and talk to the people who live in the houses here, but I can’t see anything. “I don’t see anyone doing drugs, I don’t see anyone with a gun,” Bob Mulligan told WMBF Investigates.

But Deb Smith said she knows who to call if she sees something suspicious in her community.

“If I knew there was dangerous illegal activity going on at a house next to me or close to me, I would probably call the police because it puts people in danger,” Smith said.

Ramsey Acres is another Myrtle Beach neighborhood Where police and the city work to prevent and clean up crime.

Keep Myrtle Beach Beautiful is working with Myrtle Beach’s Neighborhood Services Department to host a cleanup at Ramsey Acres to remove unwanted bulk items from yards.

Volunteers are needed for the event, which will be held on Monday, October 28, from 08.00 to 11.00 in the morning.
