Jimmy Mauldin emphasizes the importance of the steel sector for economic development

ISLAMABAD, Jun 4 (APP): A delegation led by Jimmy Mauldin (Acting Consul General, United States Consulate Karachi) visited National Steel Complex Limited (NSCL) in Bin Qasim Karachi.

He was accompanied by Stephen Berlinguette (Director CSG, USAID), Sarah Parvez (Growth Advisor, USAID) and Farrukh Mehboob Khan (Head of Party, Investment Promotion Activities USAID), said a press release received here on Tuesday.

NSCL is Pakistan’s first and largest fully integrated, eco-friendly steel complex, located in Port Qasim on an area of 220 acres. It uses the world’s most advanced direct reduced iron (DRI) technology, based on the most environmentally friendly MIDREX process in the USA.

During his visit, Mauldin emphasized the U.S. government and business community’s interest in exploring Pakistan as a potential economic hub.

He highlighted significant growth opportunities in the industrial sector, spurred by the U.S. Embassy’s desire to strengthen U.S.-Pakistan trade relations. “Steel is crucial to the economic development of any country,” Mauldin said, “and NSCL will be a catalyst for industrial growth in Pakistan.”

Mauldin took a brief tour of the facility and appreciated the state-of-the-art technology installed at the DRI facility. He concluded his visit by reiterating the US government’s unwavering support for revitalizing Pakistan’s industrial sector, especially the steel sector.

Earlier, Zaigham Adil Rizvi, CEO, NSCL, gave a detailed presentation of the project and shared statistics on the global steel industry. In his opinion, Pakistan is currently one of the countries that relies most heavily on imports of a number of semi-finished and finished steel products and engineering products. “By producing high-quality steel in Pakistan, we can produce such equipment locally, adding value with downstream industries,” he concluded.
